CALAMITIES

Calamities that come our way, which no family or individual will escape, is a time when circumstances will test the very soul of man.  Our attitude at this time is something that needs to be guarded carefully.

If we are able to keep proclaiming victory, like the Apostle Paul did when he shouted from the jailhouse, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me," it will keep us moving forward until we are able to walk right over the top of circumstances, and see them turned into glorious victory and testimony.

There is an account in the Old Testament record of I Samuel, of a woman who lived in a very dark and difficult hour in Israel.  It was a time of idolatry, and apostasy, and Israel was headed into one of the darkest nights of her long history.  This woman had a personal problem.  She could not have children, which was a disgrace in those days, and it caused her much ridicule.  One night in Shiloh when all those around her were eating, drinking, and carrying on in the normal fashion of the day, the Bible says she was in bitterness of soul.  She prayed unto the Lord, and she wept.  She made a vow to God that if He would look upon her affliction and, "... remember me," she said.  "Give me a man-child, and I'll give him to the Lord all the days of his life."

Eli marked her mouth.  She spoke in her heart and only her lips moved, and he thought she was drunk.  When she assured him that she had neither wine nor strong drink, but had poured our her soul to the Lord, the Priest said to her, "Go in peace and the God of Israel grant thee the petitions thou hast asked of Him."

A tragic circumstance in the life of a great woman, rather than accept the fact and bemoan the situation, she determined to turn the situation around, and she did!  She became the mother of one of the most stern and rugged prophets history would ever write about.

There is a principle in this that I have noticed.  First, recognizing God.  His ability, and His willingness to make all things become possible; second, giving to God.  She said, "God, if you'll give to me, I'll give back to you,"; third, her giving was a self-denial.  She wasn't giving out of an abundance where she had no need, but was giving the best, the most cherished, the only son she had.  There was no assurance or commitment by God to ever give her any more children, and as far as the records show, she never asked for any.  There is a God of grace that defies all language.  I'm glad that He loves enough to go the second mile.  She never reneged on her vow.  I'm sure it wasn't easy to take Samuel and turn him over to this regime.  Eli was old and his sons were violent men.  The boy would be raised in this atmosphere, but she committed that also to God.

There is something beautiful when under whatever our circumstances, we can feel at peace, and commit it in the will of God.  I have found this true in mission work.  The needs are so much greater than our capabilities are able to meet.  When we give it into the Hands of God, He can take a little bit and multiply it to meet the need of thousands.

HAITI LADIES SEMINAR, MARCH 4-10

I will be with Bill and Marlene Burch, of Petionville, Haiti, for a ladies seminar by the time many of you receive this Newsletter.  I set these dates with the Burch's while in Florida prior to their departure back to Haiti.  I did this by faith.  The cost of the seminar and travel expense will be about eleven hundred dollars.  I'm asking our partners to respond to this need.  We desperately need to hear from you.  Together we can plant seeds into the Haitian ladies.  Haiti, is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.  The adult literacy rate is about 55%.  The principal religion is Roman Catholicism, many Haitians, however, practice voodoo.

A Full report of the seminar will be given in the next Newsletter.  Thank you, in advance for responding to this need.  Please designate Seminar on your check.

FROM THE DESK OF CHRIS REDMAN

Thank you for your many prayers and financial blessings.  We are beginning to recuperate from the exhaustive experience.  Pathcia and Caleb are doing fine, Caleb weigh's close to six pounds now.  Adam our two year old is taking the new addition to the family well.

Patricia and I are now looking toward the future.  We are planning a major relocation to New Orleans in August.  Between now and then we are praying that the Lord will provide the means to minister in several churches in the southeast.  There are certain things which must come together for this to become a reality.  But nothing is impossible with the Lord.  Pray with us about open doors and the means of travel expense over the next several months.  Thank you again for your support and friendship.

Chris, Patricia, Adam and Caleb

Your financial contributions toward travel expenses for the seminars are greatly appreciated.  Please designate on your check the seminar you wish to help with.
