"He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm." Matthew 8:26 Jesus Christ used three methods in Has earthly ministry: miracles, teaching, and training. The last had the most far-reaching importance because of the future extension of His work. Among the lessons taught to the disciples, the one recorded in this passage was one of the most essential; the result of unquestioning trust in their Lord. Just as the Sea of Galilee was subject to such sudden disturbances, so are these hearts of ours. By strict comparison, that long-ago storm on Galilee speaks to us of those inward tossings and surgings which beset our minds and hearts. Persecution, adversity, etc., may be the outward causes, but the storm itself, as represented by turbulent Galilee, is inward, mental, and spiritual. Adversity besets us, and inwardly there arises a storm of doubt and discouragement. Many such storms we ourselves simply cannot understand. They seem beyond our control. But if Jesus is in control, He can change them into "a great calm." What lessons we thus learn of His wisdom, power, and love! When we gird up the loins of our mind by meditating in His word day and night, when the storms of life come, we will have peace in the midst of the storm. Fear, resentment, doubt, evil passion, die away when Jesus really controls the heart. He rebukes the wind and the sea, and there is a "great calm." Without the importance of calm, human character is hurried with little chance to grow spiritually. The source of our calm is FAITH--never doubting Divine wisdom and power; LOVE--receiving Christ on board of our lives; PRAYER--keeping in close touch with Him "in quietness and confidence." The storms may come and the winds may blow, but He will never let go of our hand; for FAITH leads where reason cannot walk. It is then impossibilities become challenges. The month of August, C.M.A. went through the storm financially where it looked like all hope of survival was gone. God had brought us through a lot of storms the past eleven years that I've had the missions work but this was the worst one. I knew He wouldn't fail me now. I was reminded of a statement that J. Hudson Taylor made, "Depend upon it God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supplies." I remind God every day that this is His work. Missionaries around the world depend on us for their monthly support. For some, C.M.A is their only means of help. I'm happy to report that we got through the storm and God has more than made up for it.
