...Giving thanks to our God the Father for everything...with gratitude in your hearts...Eph. 5:20; Col. 3:16. Thanksgiving Day is a special day set apart to express gratitude to God for His blessings. Dr. E. Stanley Jones says that Christians should live each day in an "attitude of gratitude." And with that we begin to understand Thanksgiving isn't just a date on our November calendar, it is an attitude, a way of life. Then we begin to feel just a little bit of what the Apostle Paul meant when he wrote that we were to "give thanks everyday for everything", and "be filled with gratitude." The Thanksgiving holiday celebrated every November in the United States is a cherished American tradition, but its roots go far back into human history, according to research conducted by the Center for World Thanksgiving at Thanks-Giving Square. Many countries in Asia -- Japan, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, for example -- for many centuries, have had festivals in gratitude for the rice harvest each year. In Africa, many tribal expressions of gratitude are like this ancient prayer, "The year has come around again, great Lord of our land -- never can we thank you for your good deeds and all your blessings." In South America, many of the native Indian cultures contain expressions of gratitude and thanksgiving, and in modern Brazil a special public day of thanksgiving and prayer has been designated for the fourth Thursday of November every year since 1949. In the British Isles and Europe, the harvest thanksgiving is observed in Protestant and Catholic churches with special altar decorations. Seven nations of the world have officially declared Thanksgiving Days. They are Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, Liberia, Switzerland, and the United States. Recently, the President of Argentina declared a national Thanksgiving Day for that country. These words from President Lyndon Johnson's 1964 Thanksgiving Proclamation might well become a habit with us everyday: "Let us...give thanks to God for His graciousness and generosity to us...pledge to His our everlasting devotion...beseech His divine guidance, and the wisdom and strength to recognize and follow that guidance." WORLDWIDE MISSIONARY EVANGELISMW.S. McMasters, presidentMission Conference Report I was a proud "Mama" when four of the boys who came up under our ministry at Full Gospel Tabernacle also attended. Three of them are now missionaries and one is a pastor. I was so surprised to see Richard Gwinn whom I had not seen in 16 years. He is a missionary in Paraguay. Over $325,000 was raised for missions during the conference. God poured out His Spirit mightily. It was said to be the best ever in attendance and in giving. Johnny Wade Sloan who was the main speaker did an outstanding job. Peru Ladies Seminar and MeetingsHave a happy and blessed Thanksgiving |
