  • Girl Children are still discriminated against receiving less food, less education and less    health care than their male siblings receive.
  • More than 2 million girls undergo genital mutilation each year.
  • According to a UN wire of June 18, 1999, "At least 2 million women from Eastern    Europe have been sold as sex slaves to the West and the practicce shows no signs of abating, according to Interpol."  The Asia route is more commonly known and still very active, making up a large percentage of the Asian national income.
  • "Honor killings" of women continue on in the Arab world: Pakistan, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Yemen and Lebanon.
  • According to a UN wire of May 29, 1999, "Besides S. Africa, 3 other countries are at the heart of Africa's AIDS epuidemic: Zambia, Aimbabwe and Uganda; ...Some 22 million people in the region are now living with the virus and are expected to die in the next 10 years.  UNAIDS expects some 40 million childern to be orphaned throughout sub-Saharan Africa in the coming years."

Most of these statistics were taken from Partner's International Women's Track AD 1000, 3rd quarter 1999, p. 4, as prepared by a team of PACWA women in Nairobi, Kenya.  Used by permission from "My Sister's Keeper" Newsletter.

DID YOU KNOW

Uganda:  A recent survey said that Ugandan women work 16 hours a day, compared to only 6 for their male counterparts.  80% of the country's food is grown by women.
Afghanistan:  Women are banned from attneding school, leaving their homes without permission, and riding in vehicles next to men who are not their relatives.
China:  Women and children are abducted and sold into marriage.  From 1991 to 1996 Chinese police rescued 88,000 abducted and sold into marriage or slavery.
United States:  Sexual and other abuse of women in custody is a serious problem for women incarcerated in local jails, state and federal prisons, and imigration detention centers. Women in custody face abuses such as verbal, visual surveillance, and sexual at the hands of prison guards, most of whom are men.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

Women in every culture around the world are searching for truth and a better existence.  This comes through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Stability in our ever changing world is Christ.  Let us continue to look for ways to reach out to hurting people with God's message of hope and love.  Do not be afraid to inform yourself of the issues that affect our world.  Then pray and ask God what part you can play in reaching out to our hurting world.  Women and men are trapped in ignorance.  We as believers must reach out to those who need to know Christ.
