FIJI ISLANDS LADIES MEETINGS
JUNE 14 - 28, 2001

I was invited by Missionary and pastor Marion Male of Labasa, Fiji for ladies meetings last year but was unable to go at that time.  Marion E-mailed me, stating since the coup a few months ago there has been a real revival to break out among the Indian and Fiji people.  Many are finding the Lord because of the persecution there.

Marion writes, "Most woman have been hit by their husband at some time or another in Fiji, even the good husbands have hit their wives at some stage.  There is not much love in an Indian home.

The Fiji Indian cufture is very much the same as the Indian culture in India.  Fiji women are almost in the same boat only there, men are much stronger and they hit much harder.  With both cultures woman are not well treated.

The funny thing is, when you first come into the country you do not see that at all, they cover it up well."

The following article was on the front page of the Fiji Times on February 2, 2001:

Pastor spared the rod

A pastor who admitted using a crowbar to beat his daughter-in-law has been spared a jail term.  And a woman's rights group has condemned the sentence as too lenient and as giving out the wrong message.  The court heard that Jone Marseo, 58, a Methodist Church lay preacher, struck his daughter-in-law several times with the weapon in July last year.  The blows pierced her leg and injured her shoulder.  Marseo pleaded guilty and was given a 12 month suspended sentence and told to pay $50 in court costs by Magistrate Salote Kaimacuata.  He was also ordered.  to stay away from the complainant and her children for 28 days.  The Women's Crisis Center deputy coordinator Edwina Kotoisuva said there seemed to be a trend where cases of assault within the home or among family members were treated with leniency.

What the court is actually saying is that it's OK to beat up your wife or daughter or daughter-in-law, she said.  If you do, then you will only get a suspended sentence.  She said that her organization had fought hard to get cases to court.  But their efforts were wasted when offenders got away with fines or suspended sentences.  The court should prove its commitment to lessening violence against women by at least issuing sentences which can act as a deterrent to would-be offenders, Ms Kotoisuva said.

HAITI LADIES SEMINAR MAY 5-11, 2001

I will be working with missionaries Bill & Marlene Burch, of Faith in Action, to conduct a ladies seminar in.  Port- au-Prince.  Our last seminar there was two years ago.  We had 100 ladies in attendance.  There were many testimonies from the ladies, how God had met them in an awesome way during the seminar.  I have held ladies seminars with the Burch's for many years but Marlene stated, that particular one was the best, with the greatest results.

This trip will be a special one for me personally to have my two granddaughters accompany me.  This is the first mission trip for Jessica (15) and Angel (13).  Carol Schiosser from Belleville, IL will travel with us and this is also her first mission trip.

C.M.A.  will furnish the food during the seminar and travel expense for those that are unable to pay.  Many of the women will travel a long way, changing means of transportation several times and others will walk.

If you feel lead to help with the expenses of either of these trips, please designate on your check: Haiti Seminar or Fiji Meetings.

It is you that makes these seminars possible.

Your financial contributions toward travel expenses for the seminars are greatly appreciated.  Please designate on your check the seminar you wish to help with.

We'd love to hear from you:
