THE CONDITION OF WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD IN 2002

An article concerning news about women around the world came from a missionary friend recently.  Because of my involvement in reaching women around the world, I found it to be very interesting.  Following are some statistics I would like to share with you.

...Women make up almost 70% of the worlds 2 billion poor(1)

...More than 1 million children, mostly girls, are forced into prostitution each year(2)

...According to a UN wire of June 18, 1999, "At least 2 million women from Eastern Europe have been sold as sex slaves to the West and the practicce shows no signs of abating, according to Interpol."  The Asia route is more commonly known and still very active, making up a large percentage of the Asian national income(3)

...Roughly 60 million women who should be alive today are "missing" because of gender discrimination, predominantly in South and West Asia, China, and North Africa(4)

...In India 5 women are burned in dowry related disputes every day

...In the USA, a woman is abused physically every 8 seconds and one is raped every six minutes, 2 million are raped globally each year

...More than 2 million girls undergo genital mutilation each year--6,000 a day

..."Honor killings" of women continue on in the Arab world: Pakistan, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, Yemen, and Lebanon(5)

...Girl Children are still discriminated against receiving less food, less education and less health care than their male siblings receive

...The total number of rural women living in poverty is estimated to be over 600 million(6)

...Nearly one billion people (855,000,000), 1/6 of humanity is functionally illiterate, 2/3 of this figure are women(7)

...Of the world's 23 million refugees, 75% are women and their dependants.

...In Bangladesh throwing acid to disfigure a woman's face is so common that it warrants its own section of the penal code(8)

We must believe that we can make a difference.  We cannot look at situations around us and become dismayed.  Instead, we must know that with God's wisdom and direction we can help change our world.  We can help people find hope and life and esteem.  We can assist people in their discovery of their value in God.  It is not impossible.
