UZBEKISTANAlthough "The Family code of Uzbekistan " strictly forbids polygamy, there is a rise in polygamy indicating some restoration of Islamic norms. In arranged marriages, abducted marriages, and additional (polygamous) marriages, the woman cannot register the marriage. However, it is officiated under the traditional Muslim "nikah" (Islamic wedding ceremony). Also, she cannot secure legal rights as a wife. Should she fall in disfavor, and her husband separate or divorce her, and he chose not to help her, she would have no legal protection for herself or her children. Uzbekistan is one of eight Muslim countries that permit abortion without restriction. Abortion is used as birth control. Sadly, there is a high suicide rate among Uzbek women.EGYPTEgypt has a culture of police brutality and turns a blind eye to Islamic violence and terrorism against Christians. Women are second-class in the Arabic culture, even in Christian households. It is not a crime in Egypt for a husband to abuse his wife.LAOSThousands of girls are lured by false promises of good wages and smuggled across the Thai border to be enslaved as domestic slaves or in the sex industry. With the finances donated through our 3 month stay in the states, we were able to purchase much needed office equipment at a third of the Fijian cost. The donated funds have also built a road to the NCTC site, and we are about to fix up our old truck ready for the next phase of building work. We have been able to pay some bills and expenses for this forth coming year and start on our first student bungalow. NCTC is now totally debt free coming into this new year of 2003. Thanks to all our friends we met in the states and especially the CMA supporters. We would like to give you an opportunity to become part of the NCTC vision. Either a one time donation or a monthly commitment would be greatly appreciated. We also need the manpower to build the buildings (i.e. work teams). NCTC 2003 Goal:3 Student Bungalows housing 10-12 students in each $12,000.Guest Bungalow (up to 8 guests) $15,000. 4 Water Storage Tanks - $1,500 each (2000 gals.). 1 Toilet/Shower Block - $7,000. Please make donations payable to CMA with the designation "NCTC" to be sent on to Marion. For more information on work teams see: www.christiantrainingcentre.org April 28 - May 7, 2003 This will be my last newsletter before going to Ecuador. Esther McMasters of Walker, LA and Pastor Regina Biount of Hammond, LA will be traveling with me to help with the teaching. We desperately need your prayers for safety and above all to be a blessing to the women in spreading seeds into their lives. You still have time to become part of the team with your financial support. Please mark "Seminar" on your check. Thanks to all of CMA partners. It is you that makes these seminars possible. A full report will be in June's newsletter. |
