LIRA UGANDA
LADIES SEMINAR

Pastors Lloyd and Regina Blount of Hammond, LA and I will travel to Kampala, Uganda on Sunday, April 29th to conduct a ladies seminar in Lira in the northern part of Uganda, returning back to the states May 15th.
Like many women in Uganda, women in Lira have been looked at as an inferior sex which lack potential to carry out particular tasks. These are vulnerable women who have lost hope in the value of life, feel very powerless and see no future ahead of them due to effects of absolute poverty, diseases, high illiteracy levels (ignorance), insecurity, HIV/AIDS and individualism. They do almost everything at home. They grow food, look after children, cook and perform community work, go hunting and fishing to improve the nutrition standards of their families, yet traditionally in the Lango society, these were exclusively men’s roles. Despite these heavy tasks they perform, their contributions towards family, community and national development is not well recognized.
Men and women give different reasons why women work more than men do:

MEN’S PERCEPTIONS
We pay so much bride price that we expect our wives to work hard in order to pay back.
In a way, we buy the women. “Once you buy somebody, that person should work for you,” one male participant said.
Some women enjoy hard work to please their husbands and in-laws and to show that they are worth the price paid for them.
Some women do not want to be helped with household work. They view household work as their domain and they do not want men to interfere.
Some women believe that they are married to work for their husbands and they view it as a failure on their part if their husbands want to help.
When we help our wives with household work, some of them gossip about it and this makes us unwilling to continue helping with such tasks.

WOMEN’S PERCEPTIONS
Men take women as slaves.
Men are selfish. They do not want to work.
Men who have more than one wife find it hard to work for all the wives and leave the women to fend for themselves and their children.

It is such a privilege to teach women like those in Lira how special they are to God and their identity in Him. It also takes teamwork to do the job. That is why it is important for you to be part of the team with your prayers and financial help. Without people like you, we would not be able to go. We are still in need of $2,500 to cover all the expenses. Please pray and ask God what He would have you to do to help lighten the load. One person can’t do it all. It takes those that “pray”, “give” and “go” to make up the team. Together we can make a difference in the lives of these women.

Your financial contributions toward travel expenses for the seminars are greatly appreciated.  Please designate on your check the seminar you wish to help with.

We'd love to hear from you:
