LADIES SEMINAR MAY 1, 2008
Samar is one of the Island’s in the Philippines. There are three provinces in this Island: Western Samar, Northern & Eastern Samar. The people here are called Waray-Waray which in English means “nothing”. This Island is one of the poorest provinces in the Philippines. Typhoons are very common. The livelihood of the people is only by fishing and farming. Samar is also one of the less evangelized provinces in the Philippines. The only way to get to Samar Island is by boat or small plane that goes only certain days of the week. Because of this no one wants to travel there to minister.
In Samar, many people are living in squatter places. They are indigent and very poor. The minimum wage they receive is $2.00 per day and cannot afford to send their children to school. Some have 8 to 10 children in the family.
Often they live in wooden huts. Some houses are elevated to keep them from the mud. Often there is no electricity and they mainly live off of rice and fish. Many fathers work in the blazing heat as “cycle taxis”. They pedal customers to their destinations for one cent per journey. |
