JUNE 6-13, 2009 I attended a mission conference at Pastor Proctor’s church in Speake, AL September of 2008. While there I met Gracie Murphree who is a missionary from Honduras that works with abused women and children. When she heard that I had a teaching ministry to 3rd world countries teaching women on self esteem and finding their identity in Christ, she invited me to Honduras. I will be going there for the first time in June of this year. There will be three separate seminars in different locations. One will be in the mountain area where there is much abuse to the women and children. They live in darkness, victims of abuse, sex crimes, sold into sex slavery and shipped off to other countries. 11 women are beaten every hour. Every 2 days a woman is murdered. More than 60% of young girls give birth between ages 12 and 18. 80% of families are headed by single moms. 1 in 3 girls will be victims of sexual abuse. Women and children are devalued, thought of as property to be used, abused and sold. Many know OF Jesus, but don’t know Jesus. They don’t know He is their savior and is active in their lives to help them out of their times of trouble. They don’t know how to be strong mothers, most neglect and abuse their children for lack of knowledge. Many fall into the arms of whatever man comes along and says he will take care of them. He will then abandon her, usually after abusing her and her children. They need to know God loves them. That He can help them and that He does not want them to live fractured lives and suffer abuse. The leaders need to know that God has called them to lead women out of violence and suffering. They need to know that God will enable them to do this special task. We will be having a seminar for leaders also. Gracie Murphree says this about their ministry to the women: “You cannot imagine how bad it is! How there is no hope for a victim when she can’t read or write, lives in a shack on a mountain, has 5 children, and her husband rapes her daughter for 3 years from age 6 until someone tells. How does she feed her children, send them to school if he goes to jail? Who will take care of them? What about the mother who sells her 10 year old daughter to men for money to buy food and she gets pregnant?” “What about the teenage girl who is abused and neglected, left to care for the babies because there is no father and mom has to work? A 30 year old man says he loves her and will take care of her if she will be his wife? At 13 she runs off with him only to be abandoned less than a year later — pregnant.” If you would like to become a partner in reaching these abused women, please designate on your check: Honduras. The estimated cost of the seminars, travel expense, lodging, etc. will be $3,500.
SPECIAL THANKS
Ellen Javillo is at home now and doing well. She is continuing to take medication for her heart condition. With the extra money sent through CMA to the Javillo’s, they were able to pay the hospital bill and buy her medication. Thanks to all of you who contributed toward this family’s need. I love John Wesley’s statement: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can.”
