Luke 7:36-50 Jesus was invited to Simon the Pharisee’s home for a meal. An uninvited notorious woman of the town was there also. She brought an Alabaster box of fragrant oil and stood at His feet behind Him, weeping. She began to wash His feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. Then she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.She was a woman who must have lost her sense of self. Mistreated by the people in her daily life, she undoubtedly carried a heavy heart and felt worthless. She must have urgently needed a word of affirmation, a reason to be alive, a purpose and a peace. Scripture refers to her as a sinner—no name, just a sinner. She probably was a prostitute who did business on the streets. Can you imagine how upset Simon was when she entered his home uninvited? Simon was hosting a men’s dinner party for Jesus that evening. No self-respecting woman would burst into a room full of men. But she did. She must have felt she had nothing to loose. By this time, Simon had enough. He even questioned Jesus’ integrity for allowing such a woman to touch Him. But Jesus could see through her tarnished reputation. He could see the woman’s heart, a heart that sought forgiveness and purpose in life. Her heart cried out for a kind word. Jesus asked Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss but this woman from the time she entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much.” She no longer would be referred to as the sinner. Jesus had restored her self-worth. The nameless woman who entered Simon’s house in pain, departed in peace. I want to ask you this day, “Do you see this woman? Did you see her when she came to your door asking for food or when you caught her shooting up drugs in your backyard or when she offered you a good time for $50.00? Did you see her? Or did you see a problem, a blunder, a junkie, a whore?” The prayer of our heart is “Lord, give us the eyes of Jesus so we might see our sister or brother as you see them. Give us your heart, give us your healing words. Let us be your hands extended to the hurt, wounded and abused women.” Amen. |
